Why LECSA EAP?
Why Have An EAP?
The other day a woman called me.  She spoke a mile a minute and tripped over her words as she listed, rapid fire, all the things happening in her life.  She was under a
lot of pressure.  She was facing a change in job responsibilities, her husband’s drinking had recently escalated, her 80 year old mother fell down a step onto her
patio at home and was now immobile.  “I don’t know where to turn, I don’t know
where to start”.  “You just did”, I replied.  “You started by calling the EAP.  Together we can sort out the issues and prioritize them.  I can suggest ways to relax in spite
of all the pressures.  Together we can take a deep breath and start to make a plan. I heard her exhale on the other end of the phone.  “I didn’t know how much I just needed to be heard”, she said and thanked me for listening.

Why Does An Employer Offer an EAP?

It’s smart business. If employees are doing well and day-to-day problems aren’t a distraction, they are more likely to be alert, motivated and concentrating on their job. This means a more productive organization. Also, it costs more to hire and train a
new employee than it does to help and keep a current employee. With an EAP in place, employees and employers gain a major benefit.  There can be a reduction of medical expenses for both.  In many cases job loss is prevented.

New York State Office of Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services Statistics

  • The cost of alcohol and other drugs in the workplace, including lost productivity, medical claims and accidents, amounts to over $140 billion per year.
  • Between 38% and 50% of all workers compensation claims are related to the abuse of alcohol or other drugs in the workplace.
  • United Airlines estimates a $16.95 return for every dollar invested in a drug free workplace program.
  • The Small Business Administration reports that drug free workplace programs produce a significant return on investment because of reduced employee turnover and increased productivity. Studies show that workplace programs cost only $22 - $50 per employee, compared with the estimated $640 in annual work force incurred by each untreated drug abuser.
  • For every dollar employees invest in an EAP, they can save between $5 - $16.
  • Family members of substance abusing employees generally have higher than average health care claims.
  • Alcoholism causes 500 million lost work days annually.
  • Studies show that alcohol and drug users are five times more likely to file workers compensation claims. Data shows that the average cost to the employer is $7,000 per abuser each year.
  • 17% of all workers abuse alcohol or other drugs.
  • As many as 90% of people undergoing treatment are compelled to do so under pressure from their employer, family, or the law, rather than seeking treatment on their own.
